Having the right size socket when dealing with these big Dodge Ram 1500 axle nuts sizes is almost always hard because you never have the right socket. Buying one also hurts because it costs so much and you only need it probably for this one job. Nevertheless, we go and buy as there is no other option.

From 1994 to 2002, the Dodge Ram 1500 axle nut was 1 ¾” (43mm). From 2003 onwards, the size was 1 ⅜” (35mm). However, if the axle has been replaced with an aftermarket product, the nut can be 36mm.

Unfortunately in this case you will need to get all 3 sockets to get the job done and then you can always return the ones you don’t use. That is what I do sometimes when it comes to this kind of situation.

There was only one change in the size of the CV axle nut. In the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 model the CV axle nut size was changed to 1 3/8″ (35mm) and it has stayed this size up to now.

So the Dodge Ram 1500 2002 and older have a CV axle nut size 1 3/4″ (43mm) and years 2003 and up have 1 3/8″ (35mm) size.

Some aftermarket CV axles comes with a nut that is 36mm, so if yours has been changed out at some point in the truck’s life, it may have the 36mm nut.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Dodge Ram 1500 CV Axle Going Out?

A constant velocity axle, also called a CV axle or a half shaft, transfers power from the Dodge Ram 1500 transmission and differential to the wheels and moves the vehicle. Regular wear and tear can take a toll and, in time, damages the CV axle. When this happens, the power from the engine will no longer be transferred to the wheels, and the truck will not be able to move.

What Does A Failing CV Axle Sound Like?

A failing CV axle sounds like a rough shaft turning against its housing. It produces a mechanical sound that is grating and will attract a lot of attention from the driver, passengers and anyone within hearing distance.

The most distinctive sound is a popping or clicking sound that usually occurs when the vehicle takes a turn. The sound is also pronounced when accelerating or when the shaft rotates faster. It sounds like a worn half-shaft or CV joint moving inside and abrading another metal.

Another typical sound of a failing CV shaft is an ominous vibration or rumbling. The vibration occurs because there is an imbalance in rotation between the opposing CV axles. The driver will be able to feel the vibration through the steering wheel. The vibration is also felt throughout the vehicle. It gets worse when traveling at high speeds.

Sometimes, when decelerating or accelerating, a grinding or knocking sound is produced by the damaged CV axle. Again, the sound is generated by the worn shaft or damaged bearings inside the joint.

However, while the mechanic is determining any damage to the CV, he can also take the time to inspect its opposing member, just in case.

  1. I’m looking to change wheel studs on my 2008 Ram 1500. The old stud does not have room for removal so I looked to remove the hub. My calliper measured just under 1 1/2” for the hub nut. From your chart I selected 36 mm and ordered a socket. It was too small. I trie a 12 point 1 1/2” socket and it was too big I tried a 1 7/16 socket and it was quite loose but worked to remove the nut. I then checked a1 3/8” socket and that was too small. Does anyone know the correct size?

    • I noticed that there is a lot of variation on these trucks for some reason. Majority is 36mm size. I think the aftermarket hub nuts on these trucks are probably causing all the confusion. I also noticed that because the size is so big, the 35mm, 36mm and 37mm are so close together that any of these sizes (as long as it actually fits onto the nut) would work, you just have to find which fits your specific nut.
