The Tundra, is a bigger truck than the Tacoma and it can tow quite a bit more. This is a full size truck that is made to do serious work. The exact towing capacity of course depends on what engine you have and weather you have the towing package installed.
The newer Toyota Tundra can tow a maximum of 12,000 lbs. with the V6 Twin-Turbo engine. The are engineered to do more with less fuel consumption. The older trucks have a V8 engine but have a lower maximum towing capacity that is about 10,000 lbs. Then there is also older Tundras with a V6 engine that max out at 7,200 lbs.
With 20+ years of Toyota Tundras to consider, it is evident that the newer Toyota trucks are really perfected to be the best trucks possible, that can perform at its peak of possibility.

Toyota Tundra Engine Options
The Toyota Tundra started out with an option of a 3.4L v6 or a 4.7L V8 engine, which were great choices at the time. In 2003 the V6 was redesigned into a 3.6L, which gave it a little more power, but the year after that, they made it even bigger, with a 4.0L V6.
This is when they decided that their V6 engine was getting out of hand and they instead created a bigger V8 engine and scrapped the V6 all together. So in 2008, the Tundra came with a choice of a 4.7L V8 or a 5.7L V8. Talk about power!!
In 2010, Toyota redesigned their smaller V8 an made is just a bit smaller, into a 4.6L. Its more efficient and stronger. This is how it stayer for over a decade.
Now in 2023, with all the pressure to be more “green” Toyota designed their new 3.4L Twin-Turbo V6 engine and made it the only option in the 2023 model of the truck.
What Determines How Much The Toyota Tundra Can Tow?
With the older 2000-2006 Tundras towing capacity, the maximum towing capacity stayer right around 7,200 lbs. But with the newer 2007-2022 Tundras towing capacity, the maximum towing capacity stayed around 10,200 lbs. for over 10 years.
In 2023, with the Tundra’s newly redesigned Twin-Turbo V6 engine, they were able to squeeze out 12,000 lbs of towing capacity out of this truck.
One of the big factors that affect the towing capacity besides the engine power is the weight of the truck. The size of the cab, the bed, and then weather it has a 4WD system or not. All these things add weight to the truck so the more weight is added the less capacity for towing.
The Toyota Tundra Towing Package
The towing package is an optional upgrade that can be added to the truck. This is not just a fun little upgrade, this actually makes your truck more capable. It is worth the few hundred dollars. The 2023 Tundras don’t even offer a towing package anymore, because it comes standard, and the 12,000 lbs. towing capacity come standard on the appropriately configured trucks.
Here are some other things that are included in the package:
- Toyota Tundra Towing Mirrors
- Wiring harness with 7-Pin Connector
- Class-IV towing hitch receiver
- TOW/HAUL driving modes
- Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system
- Load-leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension
- Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) with selectable front, side, and rear views
- Multi-Terrain Select (MTS)
- Crawl Control (CRAWL)
- Downhill Assist Control (DAC)
What the Toyota Tundra with 7,200 lbs. of Towing Capacity Can Tow
If your Toyota Tundra towing capacity is 7,200 lbs., you will be able to tow the following:
- Travel Trailers: Many small to mid-sized travel trailers weigh between 3,000 to 6,500 lbs when fully loaded. The Tundra should be able to manage these comfortably.
- Boats: Medium-sized boats such as a 22-foot pontoon boat (around 2,200 lbs) or a more substantial powerboat (which can weigh up to 4,000-5,000 lbs or more) would be within the towing range for the Tundra.
- Horse Trailers: A typical two-horse trailer usually weighs between 2,300 and 3,500 lbs. Including the weight of two average-sized horses (around 1,000 lbs each), the total weight would fall within the Tundra’s towing capacity.
- Car Trailers: If towing another vehicle, a car trailer itself might weigh around 2,000 to 2,500 lbs. With a regular car that weighs about 3,000 to 4,500 lbs, this combined weight would fall within the Tundra’s towing limits.
- Utility Trailers: If you need to move heavy equipment or materials for a home project or a small business, utility trailers can range from 1,000 to 3,000 lbs, depending on size and construction.
What the Toyota Tundra with 10,200 lbs. of Towing Capacity Can Tow
With 10,200 lbs. of towing capacity, you can pull the following:
- Travel Trailers: A wide variety of travel trailers can be towed with this capacity. Mid to large-sized travel trailers can be anywhere from 5,000 lbs to 8,000 lbs when fully loaded.
- Boats: This pickup truck could handle towing many kinds of boats, from smaller ones like 22-foot pontoon boats (which usually weigh around 2,200 lbs) to larger powerboats that may weigh up to 5,000 lbs or more.
- Horse Trailers: A two-horse trailer, typically weighing between 2,300 and 3,500 lbs, can be towed. Add in the weight of two horses (which can average around 1,000 lbs each), and you’d still be within your towing capacity.
- Car Trailers: If you’re transporting another vehicle, a standard car trailer can weigh around 2,000 to 2,500 lbs. Adding the weight of an average car (around 3,000 to 4,000 lbs), this setup could be handled by your Tundra.
- Utility Trailers: If you have a small business or home project that requires moving heavy items, a utility trailer can range from 1,000 to 3,000 lbs, depending on size and material, and can be easily towed.
- Fifth-wheel Trailers or Toy Haulers: Although this may vary depending on specific models, many fifth-wheel trailers or toy haulers may also fall within this towing capacity.
The Conclusion
At the end of the day, the Toyota Tundra is a full-size truck, which can tow a minimum of 4,800 lbs, and a maximum of 12,000 lbs. The determining factor of where your truck falls is mostly the year and the configuration of the truck. The less it weighs the more capacity it will have. Usually, the 2 wheel-drive trucks with a smaller cab and a short bed will have the most towing capacity.
