About the 2023 Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger, what used to be a mini-truck, these days its been becoming more and more a midsize pickup truck. I would say the only thing that stayed “mini” it its bed size. In fact I think it shrank, which makes no sense to me. Why have a truck when the bed of your truck is useless? But I digress.
In 2023 year of truck got 3 Ford Ranger models or trim levels and all come standard with the the 2.3 L EcoBoost engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. And with the impressive towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. with the available trailer tow package installed, it is able to do a lot of towing.
This new truck is available in a SuperCab or a SuperCrew® cab style and you can have a 4WD or 2WD version of this truck. They also offer an upgrade to an Electronic-Locking Rear Differential to help with traction. Everything else is cosmetic and luxury.

What does towing capacity mean?
Essentially, towing capacity is all about how much weight your vehicle can pull behind it safely. It’s not a ballpark figure, no sir, it’s a carefully calculated number to make sure you, your vehicle, and everything you’re pulling remains safe.
But where does this number come from? How is it determined? Now that’s an interesting ballet of physics and automotive engineering! The towing capacity takes into account various aspects of your vehicle, such as the power of the engine, the strength of the frame, the efficiency of the brakes, and the toughness of the tires. It’s not just about having a powerful engine or a strong frame; it’s about how all these elements work together under the added strain of towing.
Why does all this matter to you, though? Simple. If you’re planning to haul something heavy, like a boat, or maybe a camper for those fantastic family vacations, you need to know if your vehicle can handle it. Not respecting the towing capacity can lead to all sorts of problems, ranging from vehicle damage to potential accidents. So it’s always a good idea to check this number and make sure you’re all set before you hit the road. Safety first, right?
What determines towing capacity
Towing capacity isn’t just a random number. It’s the culmination of a complex assessment of several factors, each contributing to how much weight your trusty Ranger can pull.
First things first, let’s look at the engine, shall we? The power and torque generated by the engine play a critical role in the towing capacity. Of course, the transmission also shares the stage here, transferring the engine’s power to the wheels. Then, there’s the structure of the vehicle, from the strength of its frame to the robustness of its axles. The brakes, too, need to be up to snuff, as they’ll be responsible for stopping not just the Ranger but also whatever it’s towing.
But, we can’t forget the Ranger’s suspension system. If you’re towing heavy loads, the suspension needs to withstand that extra weight. Even the design of the vehicle, the materials used, and the quality of its tires play their parts in determining towing capacity. It’s kind of like a symphony orchestra – every element needs to work in harmony to ensure a successful performance.
2023 Ford Ranger Towing Capacity By Trim Level
The Ford Ranger’s 2.3 liter engines can tow some light stuff with its bumper, but with the Trailer Tow Package the towing gear is attached to the high-strength steel frame and it doubles the towing capacity to 7,500 lbs. This is pretty good for a midsize truck. When towing capacity reaches the top end of this weight limit, it is best to use trailer brakes to make sure you keep it controlled.
No matter what trim level you get, the towing abilities don’t change. The only upgrades that you will see in the different trim levels are cosmetic and luxury improvements.
